Our sisters, Becca Schulz and Sarah Petersen, had the opportunity to take action in service and character development to help others in Houston, Texas for a mission trip over spring break. In the fall of 2017, Houston and the surrounding areas were hit by Hurricane Harvey, leaving many families devastated and homes destroyed. To put it in perspective, the entire contents of Lake Michigan fell on Houston and the surrounding areas in the span of one weekend, which completely ruined the affected areas. Sarah, Becca, and members of UNK’s Christian Student Fellowship traveled to Texas to help with relief from Harvey by demolishing the rotten homes to pave the way for new starts, and to care for the survivors there as well.
Through this mission trip, Sarah and Becca became more passionate about their values of service and character development. The experience Sarah and Becca had in Texas is a true representation of what it means to truly hold Alpha Phi’s values, and our sorority supports all of our members’ passions towards growing themselves as individuals. While repairing a broken community, Sarah and Becca were able to find a new passion of changing the lives of others through service.
“This trip showed us how much of an impact a small act of compassion can have on someone. This experience was absolutely life-changing, and I’m so glad I got to experience it with my Alpha Phi sister by my side!” – Sarah Petersen
